Oshino Hakkai | 【official site】Private Villa Glamping Fuji Yamanakako

Oshino Hakkai

Oshino Hakkai is a cluster of eight crystal-clear ponds fed by snowmelt from Mt. Fuji, filtered slowly through layers of volcanic rock over the course of decades before emerging as some of the purest spring water in Japan. The village is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage component of Mt. Fuji, and has long been a place of pilgrimage — climbers once purified themselves here before ascending the mountain. It’s about a 20-minute drive from the villa.

Waku-ike, the most iconic of the eight ponds, sits at the heart of the village surrounded by traditional thatched-roof houses, a working watermill, and small souvenir shops. You can sample the spring water directly at designated drinking points, and on a clear day the ponds mirror Mt. Fuji on their surface. If you’d like a quieter experience, Deguchi-ike — the largest pond, a 15-minute walk from the main village — sees far fewer visitors and offers a peaceful, forested setting, especially beautiful during the autumn foliage season.

The surrounding streets are lined with local food stalls and small restaurants, making it easy to spend an hour or a full afternoon here. Visiting in the early morning is recommended if you’d like to enjoy the ponds before the crowds arrive.
